The Top 10 Films of 2012

2012 was an interesting year for film.  Following in the patterns of the past few years, 2012 was marked by big-budget sequels and action extravaganzas, but similar to 2011, there were a few films that stood out.  Moonrise Kingdom was a major financial success for Wes Anderson (similar to Woody Allen's 2011 film Midnight In Paris), and naturally, Tarantino's Django Unchained was the talk of the town.  However, numbers and statistics don't matter (though it is a shame that several great films can slip under the radar).  Both Leos Carax and Whit Stillman made a return from 13 years of directing silence with Holy Motors and Damsels In Distress, and Steven Spielberg redeemed himself from the travesty that is his 2011 film War Horse with his Daniel Day-Lewis helmed Lincoln.

The following 10 films are my favorite from the year 2012:
  1. Amour (Michael Haneke)
  2. Zero Dark Thirty (Kathryn Bigelow)
  3. Holy Motors (Leos Carax)
  4. Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson)
  5. Damsels In Distress (Whit Stillman)
  6. The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson)
  7. Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)
  8. Side By Side (Christopher Kenneally)
  9. Argo (Ben Affleck)
  10. Rust And Bone (Jacques Audiard)

Most Dissapointing Film of 2012:
Prometheus (Ridley Scott)

Still Need To See:
Like Someone In Love (Abbas Kiarostami)
Killer Joe (William Friedkin)
Cosmopolis (David Cronenberg)
